I say many tabs open on web browser is one of the energy draining activities.

Not long ago, I read a question that asked “How many tabs do you keep open in a single Internet browsing session?”. Wanting to give an honest answer I started counting my tabs. Yoh! scary number it was 46 tabs open. I thought to myself there must be another way. The effect of opening many tabs I call it the “And this one” effect.

The “And this one” effect has in somewhat way put a dent on my mental health and ability to focus.

I do call it the “and this one” effect because of the literal inner voice I listen to as I right click to open the link in a new tab. It usually goes like this “This one looks interesting” [open], “and this one” [open], “and this one” [open]. Because of the rush to go through article or writing on the next tab, I would rush through the content on the current tab without having fully consumed it. This rush often gets fueled by an adrenaline that somehow induces an anxiety like feeling that reduces the ability to concentrate and consume the content in the manner that makes a meaningful contribution to the subject matter being worked on.

Acknowledging the “And this one” effect in my browsing behaviors gave me the power to control how I browse the Internet. This also served as a turning point to my road to Damascus experience as I seek to improve my mental health and ability to concentrate. This acknowledgement also allowed me to develop a self-discipline principle that use termed 6 Golden Tabs. These golden tabs are mainly made of the following websites. ProtonMail, Twitter, BitClout, Medium , DuckDuckGo, and Internet Archive.

Take control of your internet browsing behavior, it will help you improve in other areas such as mental health and ability to focus.
